The Bo Government Secondary School, commonly known as “The Bo
School”, is a residential secondary school originally providing
accommodation for 360 boys but now housing over 800 boys in four
dormitories –Manchester, Liverpool, London and Paris.
Bo
school is a grade A school offering both junior secondary school
(JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS)
programmes.
It prepares its students for the following public examinations
of the West African Examination Council (WAEC): Basic Education
Certificate (BECE), and Senior Secondary School Certificate
Examination (WASSCE).
The Bo School is located in the
southern provincial capital of Sierra Leone, Bo. In addition to
being the administrative centre of the southern province, it is
the leading transportation, commercial and educational centre
for the interior of Sierra Leone. The city began its modern
development with the coming of the railways in 1889 and it
served as the capital of the protectorate of Sierra Leone from
1931-1961. Bo is ethnically diverse with a population of about
300, 000 inhabitants. It is served by all the major highways
from Freetown, Makeni and Kenema. The town is also served by an
airport. The town has a vibrant social life, and its warm
inhabitants make the city an ideal location for learning and a
safe, secure place for growing up.
The Bo School compound is sited
on a 13.5 acres of land in the heart of Bo Town, the second city
in Sierra Leone . The school itself is situated in pleasant
surroundings and is within walking distance of the Government
post office, Government hospital, police barracks, Sierratel
offices, 'soba one market' and the main shopping centre of the
Bo township.
Football fields, a volleyball
court, a lawn tennis and basketball court and cricket pitch
enrich the recreational facilities the school provides. There
are plans to rehabilitate and enlarge the school swimming pool.
There is a Music/Band Room and a plan to build a separate
creative and practical arts building. Association Football is
played during the rainy season and cricket, tennis, basketball,
volleyball and lawn tennis are played during the dry season.
Coaching in athletics is also given and a team is selected to
compete in inter-school sports. Students also compete in the
inter-town sport and athletic competitions are held annually.
Since the original mandate (to train the sons and nominees of
chiefs for leadership positions), Bo School has cultivated a
majority of the country's leaders. Part of the leadership
training derives from school's tradition of appointing a student
government comprising a senior prefect (who is head of
government), an assistant senior prefect (his deputy), prefects
for every block in every town of the Bo school. The prefects
form a cabinet which is responsible for administering every
aspect of life of the students.
The prefects appoint officers
with specific responsibilities and answerable to the
prefectorial body. Officers are normally trusted lieutenants of
the prefects and help enforce discipline in the school. Every
block prefect also appoints a block-head who is in charge of
ensuring that specific block assigned tasks and responsibilities
are performed. Prefects also appoint prep supervisors (senior
students) who ensure that junior students remain on task during
prep (study) time.
Bo School also maintains a
unique tradition of seniority which has consistently augured
well for social cohesion among students and ensured discipline
and respect for seniority beyond the school. Maggots/Greeners/Rustics
are either junior or newer members of the school (specifically
those with more recent admission numbers). They are expected to
always observe all rules of deference associated with their
positions and comply fully with specific instructions from the
other students with older numbers or other senior students.
Bo school has historically
maintained the competitive advantage over area schools and other
national schools in the areas of sports.
The
record books speak loudest here. Bo School has won every major
honour in football (soccer),
athletics,
volley ball, cricket, lawn-tennis, and basket ball. In addition
to producing champions, Bo School has also produced athletes who
have gone on to perform at the highest levels in national and
international sports. The Bo school band has been the flagship
of the school's very successful music curriculum.
